Beschreibung
This lecture course is devoted to the period from ca. 1600 to 1650; this period was characterized by political, social and religious change. The course will focus on close readings of selected plays, essays and poems; with William Shakespeare as its main author. Literary texts will be analysed as to inherent concepts of humanity, divinity and power, and placed within their historical and cultural contexts. Following the lecture course without reading texts would not make much sense, so participants are encouraged to read:
– Francis Bacon, Essays;
– William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest;
– Ben Jonson, Volpone;
– John Webster, The White Devil, and
¬ the poems contained in the anthology Metaphysical Poetry, ed. Colin Burrow.
