Beschreibung
This course will provide you with a framework for developing the skills
that will allow you to produce stylistically adequate and grammatically
correct texts. More specifically, it gives you an understanding of what
it takes to produce a successful academic text in English, including the
following:
• organizing ideas so as to provide a clear focus for the text;
• designing the text to fit in with genre conventions;
• shaping sentences that fit the context and allow the important
information to stand out;
• using lexico-grammatical combinations to ensure idiomatic phrasing;
• using the lexical constructions which are characteristic of academic
argumentation;
• choosing formulations in keeping with what is generally understood as
academic style.
Having acquired these skills means that you will have developed a
considerable discourse competence. Accordingly, our aims in this course
can be seen in the context of the relevant communicative competences
described in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, 2001).
The course will give you much of the support needed to develop your
writing skills from the B range in the CEFR framework up to the C range,
which encompasses the levels of proficiency and mastery. The central
notion here is discourse competence (CEFR, 2001: 123), which embraces
all the activities listed above. In order to accomplish this, you will
be required to submit two written papers: one ungraded practice paper
of approx. 650 words, and one graded essay of approx. 600 words, written
under exam conditions during the final course session.
